Dear

I read your magazine and it disturbs me to see advertising for tobacco products in your pages.

Smoking kills.  Each year, tobacco kills over 400,000 Americans, more people than are killed by AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, homicides, illegal drugs, suicides and fires combined. The advertisements in your magazine make kids think smoking is healthy, fun, and "cool".

The tobacco companies are targetting children in the ads you carry. They know that they have to target them, because children are their new replacement smokers...not adults. (90% of the adults who smoke started before the age of 18.)

Tobacco advertising works; 86% of adolescent smokers who bought their own cigarettes preferred the three most heavily advertised brands, (Marlboro, Newport, Camel) compared to only about one third of adult smokers.( Federal Trade Commission Report to Congress, 1995)

Every day 6,000 children light up for the first time. Every day 3,000 children become addicted to nicotine. Please don't continue to help the tobacco industry keep its deadly business going.

Please protect the health of children by refusing to take tobacco advertising.

Sincerely,
