Secretary Shalala Visits our School
Since we founded C.O.S.T. we've met officials at all levels of the government. On April 9, 1998, Donna Shalala, United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Senator Frank Lautenberg visited our school! Secretary Shalala asked us to watch counter tobacco ads to see which ones we thought were effective. She and Senator Lautenberg spoke to us about tobacco legislation and the dangers of smoking. Secretary Shalala told the group, "They are only in it for the money!"
A sixth grade C.O.S.T. member presented the Secretary with a C.O.S.T. shirt.

Later, another student painted Secretary Shalala's hand purple. She placed her hand print on our banner along with a message to the President that read, "Dear Mr. President, Please stop the tobacco companies from targeting children."

A seventh grade student presented Senator Lautenberg with the first Annual C.O.S.T. Award. Senator Frank Lautenberg has shown that he isn't afraid of "Big Tobacco". He's fought lots of battles with the tobacco industry, and he said that he'll continue to fight this one! Senator Lautenberg stated, "There will be tobacco legislation. The country will not stand by and lose 400,000 of its citizens innocently each year."

Senator Lautenberg placed his hand print on our banner and took a look at our web site. Then he encouraged us to continue working to protect kids. He said, "It is groups like C.O.S.T. that will lead the way to ending Big Tobacco's grip on America's kids. I hope students all over the country--indeed the world--utilize this great web site in their fight against tobacco addiction." Thank you, Senator Lautenberg!
